Moneyfields have adjusted well to life in Division One
South West of the FA Women’s National League and
are still unbeaten in their first four matches, following
their 3-2 victory over Portishead Town on Sunday.
Emma Pinner scored two of the goals in the win
against Portishead and she told us that the scoreline
was a ‘fair reflection’ overall and in the long term, the
team are setting their sights on achieving a top three
place:
WSS: A hard earned 3-2 win on the road for
you on Sunday, do you think that the
scoreline reflected the game on the day?
EP: I think 3-2 was a fair reflection on how the game
went as a whole. First half, I felt like we dominated
and had multiple chances to get 4-5 goals up, but
Portishead defended well, their back line was constantly communicating and they got
bodies in the way of shots on goal. We were creating some good chances. Second half was
a different game, we had a few early chances before we lost momentum and we allowed
Portishead to get back into the game. Credit to them, they worked hard both first and
second half, but we ultimately took our foot off the gas in the second half and it made for a
nervy final ten minutes after they got two goals back.
WSS: As you said, you needed to hold off a second half comeback from
Portishead, did you always feel confident of winning though?
EP: We did have to hold off the comeback. First half we were playing with a lot of confidence
and we were getting joy out wide and getting good crosses into the box. We didn't really
know how our opposition would play, but even when they got back the two goals, I still
believed we would be able to grind out the result and finish it off.
WSS: That result makes it eight points from your first four games and still
unbeaten, how satisfied are you with that record so far?
EP: I am really happy with our unbeaten run so far, we are the new team on the block, but
we have a very experienced team of players that understand each other and what it takes
to play at this level. It’s a positive step, however, it is a long season and we have many more
games to come. I think it took us the first few games of the season to find our feet but now
we carry a lot of confidence and momentum after a few good results against teams that
have been in this league for years.
WSS: You’ve made a number of signings to boost the squad in the summer and
Jade Widdows had a great day at Larkhall recently, but on Sunday it was the
evergreen Charlie Wilson who scored the winning goal, a great moment for
her?
EP: We already had a very solid, experienced squad of players going into this season, so we
knew any signings Karl would be looking to make would have to be top quality. Jade did
have a great day away at Larkhall the other week with a few goals and she also got a few
assists on Sunday against Portishead. Everyone that has signed for the team has fitted in so
well. Charlie was getting into a few good spaces in and around the box on Sunday so I had
no doubt she would score, and that there will be plenty more to come from her this season.
