Glasgow City will play Celtic in this season’s SWPL League Cup Final after both teams
came through their respective semi finals on Sunday, but neither team had it very easy on the
way to victory.
Glasgow City were first in action in the double header at Forthbank Stadium against
Spartans, but found the Edinburgh side in a typically stubborn mood defensively. Neither
side could break the deadlock in the first half and things continued in the same vein after the
break until the hour mark came. Priscilla Chinchilla broke through to slide the ball past
Rachel Harrison for the opening goal and before Spartans were able to recover, they found
themselves two behind as Julia Molin’s low cross was tucked home by Hayley Lauder. Shortly
afterwards, Lauder almost made it three but her header came back off the post and Spartans’
task was made even harder when Louise Mason was shown a second yellow card late on. City
were to crown their win in injury time and complete a 3-0 victory as Chinchilla netted her
second, finishing off from a cross by Tyler Dodds.
Celtic took on Cup holders Hibernian in the other semi final and Hibs were in no
mood to loosen their grip on the trophy, making a good start to the game which brought its
reward in the 12th minute, a good finish from Rachael Boyle putting them in front. Celtic tried
to respond and Gabriella English needed to save from a Caitlin Hayes header to ensure that
her team took their one-goal lead into half time. Within a minute of the restart though,
Jacynta Galabadaarachchi drove a low shot past English to bring the Ghirls back on level
terms. The game hung in the balance until eleven minutes from time, Charlie Wellings
crashed in a shot off the underside of the bar and Celtic were in front for the first time.
Hibernian were unable to respond to the setback and Celtic saw the game out for a 2-1 win
which ends Hibs’ hold on the trophy, which stretched back to 2016, and took themselves
closer towards winning the trophy for the first time since 2010.
The Final, between Glasgow City and Celtic, will take place at Firhill Stadium on
Sunday 5th December, with a 4.10pm kick off. Tickets are available at £8 for adults and £2
concessions, and can be bought online at scotwomensfootball.com/swpl-cup.
