Chapter 6 MANAGEMENT 303

               Electronic Mail:

The use of computers for certain types of communications is becoming a widespread
method of transferring information. The installation of software, modem and available phone line
connection will allow your computer to be used as an efficient means of communicating with your
other company locations and business associates that are similarly equipped.

Including your Electronic Mail address (email) on your stationery will provide this option
for your business associates that wish to use this method. One main advantage of e-mail is the
option of reading only from your computer monitor screen and then printing out the desired
messages and deleting the unwanted items. Depending on the type of modem and software
installed there can also be a data transfer option available. This system allows the transfer of files
and data stored on your computer to a remote computer at some other location. This would be of
interest to a company with more than one location or Project Site Offices that would be equipped
with computers, allowing this method of data transfer.

               Courier/Messenger Services

Due to the increased use of the Fax Machine, Electronic Media and a Priority Postal
Service the need for a Mobile Delivery Service should be reserved for special situations or urgent
and distant deliveries. This system of delivery became very popular during the Post Office crisis
and note that the Federal Postal Service has amalgamated with Private Courier/Messenger
Companies. This amalgamation is likely due to their loss of business through the unreliability and
numerous Postal Service interruptions in the past. The problem with Courier/Messenger Systems
is the potentially habit forming use of this costly method to transmit information. Other than a
requirement for sending original and bulky documents all the other methods should always be
considered first. For companies with vehicles and a mobile staff the idea of making your own
deliveries while travelling on business within your Trading Territory should always be considered.
