Chapter 6 MANAGEMENT 305
Computer Software:
Due to the extensive software products available for the tasks to be computerized, we
provide the following list of common tasks to consider.
Word-Processing (correspondence)
Accounting (payable, receivable, payroll)
Spread Sheets (scheduling, budgets, project management)
Communications (E-Mail/Fax/Data)
Drafting (design drawings)
Estimating (take-offs, pricing, budgets)
This list covers some of the basic tasks to be considered and depending on your make of
computer and operating system, the software selection will be virtually endless. We recommend
purchasing your own licensed copy of all software programs, therefore giving you technical phone
support, upgrade information, manuals, and any known glitches or errors. The possib ility of
introducing a computer virus from pirated and non-purchased software applications will require a
Software program that can detect and eliminate these viruses.
The exclusive use of computers for your information and data storage will require a secure
and regimented back-up system. Whether you use a tape method that is automatically activated
or a floppy disk for each day of the week, ensure an additional separate copy of all back-ups be
stored off premises and away from the original copy. Due to the licensing restrictions on many
software programs it is recommended where permitted, that you make one copy of all original
program disks prior to installation on your computer system. These back-up copies should be
safely stored off-premises and away from your program disks.
