BEYOND BASICS
practice side kick, side kick, side kick, and more side kicks! Finally,
I was ready! I got up, presented my form, and completed the form.
After finishing I realized that I had completely left out the side
kicks! Doh!
That incident was the impetus to
change my correction method to
something I call “Part
Replacement”. Imagine removing
a car’s Fan, fixing it, and putting
back in. If you fail to reconnect
everything the car will still be
“broken”. You have to know what
connects before and after the part
being replaced for it to function
correctly.
The side kick incident made me aware that I had to not only
practice the side kick but also the movements which came just
before and right after to recognize when the change was coming
and then how to continue after the change.
I could feel the thought slipping from
my mind.
But I digress! Visualization can help you develop sparring or
self-defense techniques as you imagine the scenario and its
response and possible variations. If you have a training partner or
students, who can be your Guinea Pigs, you can test to see how
and if the technique works and what variations become available.
