To practice or develop a technique
against a specific strike, I would
have to try to remember what that
looked like or perform the strike in
front of a mirror to try and imprint
that strike into memory. The
Defensive Triangle concept helped
immensely as it defined the path of
a strike without having to actually see it.
I do have the ability to connect a “visualization” to a physical
movement. Without performing the movement, I can mentally
“feel” or sense when something is not correct.
If you fail to reconnect everything the
car will still be “broken”
While waiting my turn for Forms competition, my preparation was
to pace back and forth going over my form mentally until called.
While pacing I could sense when something “felt” off whether a
stance, kick, block, etc. I would stop and physically drill the
movement until it felt correct physically and then I’d plug it back
in mentally and resume my pacing.
Yeah, I know, WEIRD!
At the 1972 International Karate Championships in Long Beach,
CA, I had one of those “feelings” that the side kicks in my form
Kong Song Kun (Kankudai) were off. All morning long all I did was
