BEYOND BASICS
As mentioned previously, I fought from a left side lead. So, these
six angles were developed from and for a left lead position.
Angles 1, 2, & 3 are trained reactions against a right-side attack, 4
& 5 against left side attacks, and 6 against attacks from either side.
Angle One is used when an opponent is telegraphing a right-side
attack (lead back fist, reverse punch, front kick, etc.). Counter
occurs as soon as the attack is launched. Most block first then
move! Develop a trained reaction by first practicing the timing to
block the attack, then add the angling step to coincide with the
block so the movement to block also causes the angling step.
The Side Block is like throwing up a
"wall" to protect the entire side.
Angle Two occurs when an opponent attacks a little quicker than
expected causing a step backward. The mindset should always be
on getting out of the way (off-line) of an attack. The trained
reaction is to practice angling out with the step back.
Angle Three is a trained reaction for when completely surprised
by an attack. Think about how you react when surprised and train
