BEYOND BASICS
went in to petition the Dean, also
a personal friend to see if we could
start the program. He liked the idea
but he said it required a certified
teacher which wasn’t me!
On the first day of class, there were
two other Black Belts enrolled.
Well, in came our Karate teacher…
wearing a brand-spankin’ new
uniform, complete with White Belt,
and a book on Karate!
I tell you this because this was also my Fencing teacher!
In Fencing we were taught how to block, parry, and attack basically
with one hand. Although it wasn’t a lengthy period for learning the
art of Fencing, I found that the position of the foil protecting the
centerline was very similar to Wing Chun.
I defensively monitor four zones to
prevent flailing at kicks and strikes
As in Fencing, only one hand is used to protect the centerline.
In this case, you will create a defensive triangle to defend
against attacks. The Defensive Triangle is the same as the
Offensive Triangle except now your hand which is protecting
the centerline, the tip of the triangle is pointing at your
opponent’s centerline, and you’re going to deflect any attacks
from the centerline to the outside of your shoulder lines.
