BEYOND BASICS
What is the Triangle?
OK, so let’s define the triangle. Stand with both hands straight out
from each shoulder, palms facing each other. Bring the hands
together so the fingertips touch. This is the Triangle with its point
on your Centerline. Monitor an opponent’s attack by watching for
techniques that come inside the shoulders and which go outside
of the shoulders.
Reach straight out with either hand to touch the outside of
your partner’s shoulder. This is the shoulder line. My
preference is to deflect the attack from the outside in.
Now obviously, you aren't going to reach out and touch your
opponent's shoulder to deflect the attack. The deflection hand
can start anywhere on the shoulder line to pick up and deflect
the attack.
Defending the Triangle allows you to
monitor any attack coming in from either
inside or outside of the shoulder line.
With an attack inside the shoulder line, your hand will pick up
the attack and draw it back across to the opposite side of the
head deflecting the attack (cross deflection).
Attacks that come in from outside the shoulder line will again
start the deflecting hand on the same side shoulder line but
draw it straight back to the side of the head. (outside deflection)
