BEYOND BASICS
Start by finding a comfortable distance where you’re confident
that you could launch a successful attack 90-100% of the time. This
distance will vary from opponent to opponent. Then find a
comfortable distance where you can successfully defend 90-100%
of the time. Again, this will vary depending upon the opponent.
You will also notice that your attacking distance and your defensive
distance are probably not the same. This is normal to want a closer
distance on offense than on defense. Ultimately the closer you can
get these two distances to each other the better.
Once you “know” both your offensive and defensive distances,
you are now ready.
Perception Speed is making someone
"believe" that you're faster than you
actually are.
At your best defensive distance, creep forward a few inches to be
closer to your partner. Sometimes an inch is all you need. This will
force you to react a little quicker due to the shorter distance. As
you get comfortable defending from that distance, move closer.
Keep moving a little closer as you become comfortable with each
distance.
The opposite applies to offensive distance. This time move slightly
further away from your partner so you now have to move a little
faster and work to eliminate telegraphing your intentions to
remain effective.
This practice helped me to remain on a highly competitive level
without having the same level of partners to train with.
