ICD HISTORY
Quote from “Reflections on 100 Years for ICD” address given by Section VIII International Councillor and
Past International President, Dr Clive Ross CNZM, at the Section VIII centenary induction ceremony in Perth
on 30 October 2021: “Understanding history is important. It is from understanding our history that we
grow as individuals and as an organisation and develop exciting new directions for the future. My hope
is that this reflection tonight will leave each of you with a recognition of the values of ICD, with a sense
of pride in being an ICD Fellow and will encourage you to contribute to the future of the College. Each
generation builds on the shoulders of those who came before.”
For the 2021 Section VIII centenary induction ceremonies and dinners planned to be held in Rotorua on
September 18 and in Perth on October 30, some Section VIII history and early ICD history was compiled
for the programs to be printed for these special events. Each historical compilation was specific to the
location: the history for the Rotorua program highlighted ICD leadership from New Zealand Fellows; the
history for the Perth program highlighted ICD leadership from Western Australia Fellows.

THE NEXT 100 YEARS
ICD ON THE WORLD STAGE
In his address at the Perth induction ceremony, as a glimpse into the future, Clive commented on the
recent conferring of special consultative status by the United Nations on the International College of
Dentists. This special designation indicates the pre-eminent position and worldwide reputation of ICD
and hopefully makes all ICD Fellows even more proud to be part of the College.
Excerpt from College announcement:
“The International College of Dentists (ICD) is proud to announce that it has been granted Special
Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). This designation not
only provides access to ECOSOC, but also to its many subsidiary bodies as well as special events organized
by the President of the General Assembly. Under Consultative Status, the College may provide expert
analysis to the ECOSOC on issues directly related to its experience in oral health, identify arising issues and
challenges, help monitor and implement international agreements, help raise public awareness of relevant
issues, while playing a major role in advancing United Nations goals and objectives when they are aligned
with College goals and objectives. The College will also be able to attend international conferences and
events and make written and oral statements when called upon, organize side events, enter United Nations
premises, and network with influencers and decision-makers around the world.”
