And his final thought was, ‘In the process, I empowered them. Wow! I must do more of this. It feels so good.’

As soon as he reached his desk, he pulled out and booted his laptop. He was surprised as he had

never entered in his notebook at work. ‘But this cannot wait,’ he said to himself. He opened the page

where he had summarized his findings yesterday and added one more sentence.

Dan’s Learnings

What Makes Ron Succeed?

1. The ability to make people feel VALUED. This EMPOWERS them and produces

better decisions/ solutions/ results.

Pleased with himself, Dan went back to work.

The week passed faster than usual. Things were better at home; Betsy was delighted with changed

Dan. So were Dan’s direct reports who were noticing a difference in Dan’s behavior; he had suddenly

become collaborative and being with him was not so taxing! Tom too was noticing this positive change

in Dan and had decided that he will talk to Dan to understand the cause.

Dan had one of the best weeks in memory and was excitedly looking forward to his second meeting

with Ron. The Walmart order was delivered on time. He had written a brief email informing the CEO

and received a sweet thank-you email back almost instantaneously. Mastery function President Bob

Soros, Ron Falcon and Joe Bird too congratulated him on the achievement. He had passed all the

kudos to the team who too were delighted at the successful outcome, especially because of their

personal contribution to resolve the crisis.

Dan’s only regret for the week was his inability to spend time with Tom. He was determined to

correct it and had set a meeting with him on Monday.
