“Great learning. We will talk more about these later. Any other learning Dan?
“There are some minor ones. I will cover them in due course.”
“We will today focus on communication. I am sure you have had several trainings on the subject.
But as it is the foundation of what we will discuss later, some repeat will do no harm.”
“What is communication? Any thoughts?” Ron asked.
“It is the act of sharing and exchanging information, knowledge, thoughts, ideas and feelings.”
“Yes, this is how dictionary defines it. What do you think constitutes communication?”
“Ron, I had considered communication to be read, write and speak. I knew listening was important,
but I always included it within speak. Last week made it amply clear to me that listening is probably
the most important aspect of communication. Another surprise learning of last week was about
questions; I had never considered questions as a critical part of communication, but I have now learnt
that it is critically important.” Replied Dan.
“To summarize, communication is Listen, Ask, Speak, Read, and Write.”
“Can you convert it into a picture Dan?”
Dan got up, walked to the white board, picked up markers and drew a picture.
“Did I capture it correctly Ron?”
“It is a reasonable illustration per your description. We will see if this picture is complete. What are
the forms of communication Dan?”
Dan thought for some time and replied, “There are two -- Spoken and Written. All others are
variations. For example, Speaking, Listening, Asking are the variations of Spoken; Reading and Writing
are the variations of Written.”
