Privately, Dan is highly dissatisfied about Tom’s promotion. However, as essential part of the

Talent Development system of The Global Company, every senior management promotion proposal

must be discussed and approved by the leadership team of one-up manager; for Tom’s promotion,

Dan must get alignment in his boss Joe Bird’s leadership team, that includes all Joe’s direct reports,

i.e. Dan and his peers.

The question of Tom’s promotion always results in a mixed response. There are always some who

‘but’ the proposal, “Tom is good, but…” The ‘buts’, though somewhat different have a common

theme. Dan cannot get the nod to promote Tom if some members of the leadership team ‘but’ the

proposal.
