ONE

Dan Webber was hired by The Global Company 19 years back through their customary annual

campus recruitment. A handsome young man with athletic built, good academic record, and charming

disposition, Dan was one of the 2 hired from his university that year.

A lot has changed since. Although age has made little difference to his looks and physique, the

cheerful demeanor has been lost somewhere on the way. It has been replaced by cold, no-nonsense,

controlling attitude with a shade of negativity.

Dan is a technical master and good at what he does. He made Associate Director after 13 years of

excellent service. But that would not have been possible without strong advocacy and sponsorship of

his Vice President Ron Falcon, who ironically was hired by Dan 15 years back.

Dan had selected the young Ron Falcon during campus recruitment. With an excellent academic

transcript, strong extracurricular record, and an extremely attractive personality, Ron was the top pick

from his campus. As a trainee, he displayed quick learning and extraordinary leadership skills. He was

identified as one of the best new hires and put on fast-track. Dan’s training and coaching played an

important role in development of Ron’s technical knowledge and skills in those early years. He was

given roles of increasing responsibility rather early in his career and rose the ranks faster than Dan.

One day, he became Dan’s boss.

It was sometimes whispered that Dan is more intelligent, and Ron’s bypassing Dan was talked as

an example of the unfairness of the Talent Development system in The Global Company. Despite

that, Ron has good relationship with almost everyone, including Dan.
