Dan has a habit of noting observations in his personal diary. He picked this habit in childhood
through his father’s encouragement and continues it after 40 years, albeit digitally now. He often refers
to his notes and finds them the best way to experiential learning. For the past few years, the
observations are often about Ron and his exponential growth. The notes often end with a question
mark. Dan wonders, ‘How can Ron continue to grow?’ ‘What does Ron have that I don’t?’ A satisfactory answer
always eludes Dan. He has made several hypotheses but is unable to put his finger on any specific one.
Everyone knows that Ron is exceptionally smooth with bosses and peers, and almost never
confronts, to a fault. But Ron is equally smooth with his direct reports and other juniors. He is
approachable and genuinely cares for people. In short, he is liked by all, and almost invariably gets his
way through with bosses, peers, and juniors.
Dan has thought of approaching Ron several times in the past to ask him directly but has always
hesitated because of the personal and sensitive nature of the question. The bouts of frustration have
continued and have started to affect him and his work. During one of those exasperated moments,
Dan finally decided to take it head on and ask Ron directly.
He called Linda Fernandes, Ron’s Executive Assistant, and setup one-hour appointment on Friday
evening. He chose Friday purposefully so that he can get time to reflect on their discussion over the
weekend. Once that was accomplished, Dan felt calmer and went about the normal day routine.
