procedures. John needs some external support till he learns not only the new processes, but also about

his new department and team members. I would suggest bringing Ray Homme on a short-term

assignment to support John as Ray has already implemented these new processes successfully.”

While talking, Dan was thinking of the question that has been nagging him. ‘boy, he doesn’t even know

such simple things! What really makes him succeed and grow?’ ‘But he does seem to value my opinion. I am glad he

asked; I can help.’ His thoughts were abruptly interrupted as Ron started to speak.

“Thanks Dan. This is helpful. I was sure that you will be able to guide me. I will talk to John and

see how to help him.” Ron’s words worked wonders to lift Dan’s somber mood and he thought, ‘I do

enjoy meeting Ron; he makes me come alive!’

“Thanks again Dan,” “Now tell me how I can help you?” Ron enquired courteously.

Dan started hesitantly, “Ron, a question has been bothering me for a long time. I thought that you

will be the best person to answer it as it pertains to you. I must clarify that please feel free to say no if

you find it too personal. I would also like to caution you that I may be brutally honest to the point of

probably being rude; I hope you will bear with me and not mind that.” Said Dan, almost apologetically.

“We go a long way Dan. You hired me and taught me so much. You are one of the architects of

making me what I am today. So, there is nothing you say will ever offend me. Please be as open and

forthright as necessary. I will try my best to answer.”

“Thanks Ron. I know I can count on your help.” Dan paused and slowly resumed, “As we have

talked before, I have never been able to understand why I cannot make Director. Although I do not

understand or agree, I have reconciled to the fact that I will most likely retire Associate Director.” He

paused. “I see several people making Directors who are junior to me and honestly, not as competent.
