As Dan read what he had typed for the nth time, he began to wonder how he would have behaved

if he was in Ron’s place.

1. ‘I would have greeted the individual from my desk and would have requested him to wait for a few minutes

till I finished what I was doing. I am so busy these days.

2. I would not have thought of getting coffee from outside even if I knew it was his favorite. Whatever he

needed, I would have asked my Assistant to get from the pantry.

3. I would never have sought advice from a junior even if I were facing a huge problem; it would make me

seem uncertain and weak.

4. I would not have bothered with personal questions and immediately got down to why he wanted to see me.

5. I would have figured out a logical explanation to his question, rationalizing my rapid upward growth.’

Suddenly he froze.

‘Would I have made my visitor feel the way Ron made me feel? NO! Not even close.’ ‘My visitor would have felt

neither valued nor comfortable. He would have had to hear my monologue and would have walked out probably feeling

even more frustrated than he did when he walked in.’

The realization came as a shock.

When Betsy walked into the study and said hello, Dan came out of his slumber, unsure how long

he was sitting there dumbfounded.

“Hi Betsy?” is all he could mutter in a feeble voice. Betsy said something, which he did not hear;

his mind was busy drafting the next entry for his notes. “I will join you in just a few minutes. Need to

finish this important task.” He uttered vaguely.
