Ron came out of his workstation to greet as Dan walked into his office and hugged him effusively.
He guided him to the corner sofa where steaming hot Starbucks coffee awaited them. They sipped
coffee, exchanged pleasantries, and began talking about their families.
“How is Betsy and Jonathan?” Ron enquired.
“Betsy is busy with her newfound passion for social work. Jonathan spent the long weekend with
us. He is overly excited and is doing well at Carnegie.”
“How is Nancy? Is the pregnancy going well?” Dan asked.
“Not so good Dan. Nancy’s mother is with us now, which has made it easier. Doctor says first few
weeks is the toughest part; she should be fine after that. We are looking forward to that.” Ron replied.
They continued personal talk for some more time, and then Ron said, “Linda told me that you
have something personal to discuss, but before we get there, I need some help Dan.”
“There have been some complaints since John Carpenter took over Logistics department. Some
Key Performance Indicators also show a dip. I had a chat with John earlier this week; he believes that
the people capability is quite low. I do not get it. Everything seemed fine just a few months back when
Ralph Decker was leading. How can the organization capability change so quickly?” Ron stated.
“Will appreciate your thoughts as you have handled that department before.”
Dan was quick to respond, “I can’t say for sure, but I think the root cause may be work process
changes that were implemented just before Ralph was transferred. Leadership change, immediately
after such an extensive process transformation, is not advisable as the team is still learning the new
