April A.S.C.E.N.D. Session
“Speak clearly, exude confidence, put your best
foot forward so you can set yourself apart” were
just a few of the pieces of advice that Soror Yvette
Evans gave Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.
Epsilon Gamma Omega ASCEND students on
Saturday. Soror Evans, with the Decatur City
School System, gave a presentation on
Professional Etiquette. Included in her
presentation were undergraduates from the
University of Alabama in Huntsville who served
as models demonstrating what to wear to a job
interview? Next, Soror Mildred Blackshear
conducted a Fashion Show with ASCEND students serving as models exhibiting appropriate church, business
and school attire. The next activity centered on our United Nations Classroom.
Soror M. Lynn Sherrod facilitated an activity on Climate Change. As part of
the activity, each student was
assigned a country and shared
how climate change is affecting
their country. Student
representatives met in various
caucuses in order to come up with
solutions on how to address
climate change in their assigned
country and on a global basis.
They concluded this portion of the
session with a discussion on how
climate change personally affects
their everyday lives and ways they
can make personal impact to preserve plant resources. The second half of the
ASCEND session consisted of a review of the importance of conducting a
College Visit and a robotics project by Andy McCoy. ASCEND students will
complete a STEM science project and community service project before
graduating from the program in May. Applications for the next cycle of the
High School ASCEND program will be available in May. Be sure to view the rest of the pictures on Smug
Mug.
