TARGET V: GLOBAL IMPACT
Article By: Soror Lynn Sherrod
Epsilon Gamma Omega Chapter pre-launched Target V activities in October 2014 by
observing International UN Day. Target V, led by Sorors M. Lynn Sherrod, Marian
Guidry, and Yvonne Sanderson, will address two areas of importance: Global Education
and Engagement and Youth Empowerment, Education and Nutrition Initiatives in Africa.
Target V in collaboration with Columbia High School, an International Baccalaureate High School, will
implement the United Nations Association of the United States (UNA-USA) Classroom Project during the
spring semester of 2015 school year.
The Global Classroom Project is an innovative, educational program that engages students in an exploration
of current world issues through interactive simulations and curricular materials. The program is designed to
cultivate literacy, life skills and the attitude necessary for global citizenship. The core of the program is the
Model United Nations, wherein the students step into the roles of UN Ambassadors and debate issues on the
current UN agenda. EGO members will provide lesson plans and materials, and will furnish resource
personnel to conduct six class sessions. Target V will culminate the Global Classroom program with a visit
to the United Nations Headquarters. The program will focus on Human Rights and the Ebola crisis in West
Africa. The adopted country for this project will be Sierra Leone.
To address the second prong of Youth Empowerment, Education and Nutrition Initiatives in Africa, Target V
is seeking to partner with the 14th Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME
Church). The AME Church operates two universities: African Methodist Episcopal University and Monrovia
College both in Liberia, West Africa. An area critically affected by the Ebola crisis and in dire need of support.
Vice Chairman Sherrod has become a member of the Board of the United Nations Association Alabama, and
is the only member of the Board outside of Jefferson County.
