V 1.1 February 2024
The second video is Nick’s June 2023 SiteWorks demo*** from a u3a: Let’s Talk
Tech Facebook session and you can find this at
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQa7i9qVhqQ
** This video is the Alpha version of the product but the content is still valid.
It is 24 minutes long and gives you a good introduction to site editing.
*** This video is the Beta version of the product and covers much of the Alpha
video plus a little more. The entire Let’s Talk Tech session was videoed
and is 1 hr 44 minutes in total. Nick’s part begins just after 9 minutes and
ends around 41 minutes with Q & A following on.
The videos listed above are pre-release. As time moves on there may have been
minor changes in detail with later versions of the software but the videos will
remain available for viewing as long as the content remains relevant.
Once you have Local and the demo site installed and working then you are ready
to use SiteWorks. Screenshots in this entire section are too small to read easily
in detail but will familiarise you with the layouts. You will be using this pdf
document and can increase the page size if your screen device size can
accommodate it and you can also turn on the sidebar navigation to help you find
your way through the document and/or return to a previous point.
Later, when you are teaching your own u3a people to modify, say, their group
page then you can use the same process as you are starting now or use a
protected page on your server-hosted site. This will be your choice at the time.
Author training is being developed.
Questions about your own site
As you work through the menus in the sections below and the self-checks you
might be prompted to think of your own site and wonder ‘how would I do x’.
Write the question down and perhaps it will be answered as you continue with
the workbook. If you can’t find the answer then hold that question for the
migration phase where you will have a Migrator working alongside you who will be
able to answer that question or, if not, will know someone who can.
Alternatively you could take a look in the User Guides where there is often
greater technical content than in this workbook -
https://siteworks.u3a.org.uk/user-guide-betterdocs/
There is a link at the end of Part 3 to the Help Desk but The Help Desk is for use
after migration.
Local is widely used around the world and the training demo site has also been
tried and tested again and again. The chances of you finding a bug are highly
unlikely but not impossible. If you have a site question then keep it for your
Migrator in part 2 onwards.
