SiteWorks Pre-Migration Checklist
You will need a copy of the pre-migration checklist and you can start working
through this whenever you want to. You need to complete it by the end of Part 2
of this workbook. You will find that on the SiteWorks website as well. Go to
https://siteworks.u3a.org.uk/ then Web Managers >Pre-Migration Checklist.
In Part 2 you will be receiving an initial copy of your migrating Site Builder site
content (a data extract) to use and the better you have prepared your Site
Builder site for the migration the more accurate and complete your content will
be.
Amongst other things this includes deleting any unused or unwanted information,
checking links, and reinstating any missing information that is wanted on your
new site.
You will be able to see the effect of this site preparation when you view your
migrated data and you will have time in part 2 to modify your Site Builder
content before the final data extract at the time of migration.
This checklist is mentioned several times in the following pages to remind you of
actions that need to be taken and as you proceed through those product
sections you will understand why the preparation is important.
Local, Demo zip file, and WordPress Updates
Like all major software, WordPress gets updated on a regular basis. This can be
anything from a patch to fix a minor issue through an interim release that covers
fixes and some new features to a completely new release that combines all
patches and interim releases and adds yet more new features.
As u3a SiteWorks is WordPress based we’ll get any updates automatically.
Before new releases are formally released, they are available in Beta format so
that Developers such as those in our SiteWorks team get a chance to review
them and test them with their own coding or plugins to ensure ongoing
compatibility. Thus when we get the new release via our SiteWorks site we can
rest assured that it will not cause us any problems.
Local WP is a WordPress simulation software that enables developers or testers
to create or modify pages in a browser environment but also to test new
software releases or plugins in a safe environment away from the main live site.
The Lead Developer on the SiteWorks team uses Local himself for this purpose
before testing in a live server environment. Local is also updated and in synch
with WordPress.
The folks at WordPress in the States have said that they are working towards a
more user-friendly graphical environment and that there are more product
enhancements coming in the future. When there is a new WordPress release it
can contain a variety of features such as an easier to use interface in a menu
area but also things such as additional themes. We have no interest in the latter
as we have our own u3a theme.
