106 The Unforgettable Moments in Life
Coach
By Katelyn Martinez
Coach Carter is a basketball coach at Lakeside Jr High
School and has been coaching here for about four years. She
is a female health educator and the head girls’ basketball
coach. Carter is a very caring, thoughtful, and fun coach.
Her players love her, for the most part. When Coach Carter
was younger she used to play games of one on one with her
older brothers and cousins. This is a story about the first game she won.
When she was younger she used to play games of one on one outside. She would play
with her older brothers and cousins but never really came close to winning. They didn't care that
she was a little girl, or that she was younger than them. They treated her like everyone else.
When she would make mistakes, they´d call them out and take the ball back. But one day she
was playing against her older cousin, Johnathon. She remembered the score was 8-9. They would
play to 10 but she had to win by 2. She had 9. She remembered her cousin Keith telling her she
had to make one more shot to win. She shot the ball and missed… but the ball bounced off the
front of the rim and came right back to her. She threw up another shot and it went in! All her
cousins cheered for her.
Now that she’s older, she understands that Johnathon had let her win. But at the moment,
she couldn't have been more proud of herself. She would always get bullied by them in games,
but now finally, she had beaten somebody. She felt accomplished and proud of herself. After
taking so many losses, she finally reached high enough to pull down a victory.
