104 The Unforgettable Moments in Life
Celebrating Traditions By Kamden Gardner
T is a teenage boy that
is new to Arkansas. He is from
Hawaii. T just moved to
Lakeside Jr High and was in
my old English class. One
tradition he enjoys is
celebrating someone's first
birthday. It's a tradition to have
a big celebration where both
the mother's and father’s families come together to celebrate.
They have lots of music and food. Weather conditions do not affect this tradition. If it's
nice outside, they will celebrate outside. If it's not the best weather outside, they will celebrate
inside a building or gym.
My family is very different. In my family, when someone is having their first birthday, it
is just as important as when they turn any other age until about sixteen or seventeen. At every
birthday we have food, games, music, cake, and presents.
I think it's cool that the Marshallese make shirts with whoever's first birthday it is. In my
family, we celebrate differently than Marshallese on our first birthday. I remember on my sister’s
first birthday, we had over a few people on my stepdad’s side of the family and a few on my
mom’s, we didn't make it a huge deal, but it was still something to remember, My family doesn't
usually plan big parties. We would rather spend more money and time on presents and decorative
