24 The Unforgettable Moments in Life
Where Gretchen Grew Up By Angee H.
My friend, Gretchen, grew up with her mom, dad, and sister, and they usually had one or
two dogs. Her house was surrounded by other houses along with some trees. The weather varied
from warm to cold. She and her sister, Mary Kate, shared a room for the longest time and passed
a soccer ball around in their yard.
Every Thanksgiving her family and other relatives would come over. The crowded rooms
were filled with laughter and yelling. Gretchen would often give up her comfortable bed for her
aunt and uncle, while she, Mary Kate, and a few other cousins would all share a room. The rest
of her cousins would sleep on the couch. Thanksgiving is always busy and exhausting for her.
One time the family decided to take a family picture but to get her entire family to take a
good picture only happens once in a lifetime! They would all go outside where they would shiver
with clenched teeth. Starving and cold they would
wait for the perfect moment. Well, of course, her little
cousins wouldn't stop crying or sit still. Her sister
didn't like her smile. Everyone else was trying to fix
each other’s poses and that made them mess up.
This happens every Thanksgiving. It's like one of her family’s traditions. It's stressful but
eventually, when they all get the perfect picture, it reminds them of their growth over the years
and how they have changed. Taking the yearly family picture will always be a tradition that
Gretchen remembers when Thanksgiving comes around.
