Memories With Grandpa

When I was a young girl living in the small
town of Dodge City, Kansas, 150 miles west of
Wichita, I would always get excited about
going outside. I would go to the rodeo with my
grandpa every year. I was always so excited to
go! Everybody yelled and cheered, even in the
blazing heat of the Kansas summer sun. The
humidity made the heat of the sun turn into a 400-degree oven. The porta potties turned into
nasty smelling dumpsters. I still remember every little detail about the rodeo. The people were
just so kind and generous, and I loved the mini games that they had. The food there was hot and
fresh. The rich flavor of the food filled the mid-southern air until it was destroyed by the porta
potty smell.
The biggest part of the rodeo was when everyone watched the bull riding to see a rider
get thrown off. It was funny to see. The bull went left, right, and jumped when it hit the ground.
It would tip back on its two strong hind legs and rock the rider like it was on a seesaw. It was so
crazy and insane to watch.
The thing I remember the most about the rodeo wasn't the food, it wasn't the games and
the people there. It was spending time with my grandpa. At the time, he was 70 years old with
gray, short hair and 3 teeth missing in the middle, 2 on the top and one on the bottom. His face
was scrunched together with wrinkles on his forehead. He was always dressed in worn-out
brown boots and blue jeans. He was always so happy! He drove me in his old truck, got me ice
