Dulce’s Family Tradition
By Gisela Hernandez Rodriguez
One tradition my friend, Dulce, and her family has is going to Mexico every Christmas
up to New Year’s to celebrate. They celebrate this tradition by having fun, going to church,
singing together, playing this game Mexican people are very familiar with called La Loteria, and
spending time with family.
One special memory Dulce has of last year's Christmas was when she and her family
visited this place called “San Juan De Los Lagos” in Mexico. This place is very beautiful, and
many people like to visit once a year because of how beautiful the surroundings are and because
their church is based on this Saint. This place doesn’t only have a huge beautiful church and
surroundings, but many little shops where people like to sell handmade ornaments to the memory
of San Juan De Los Lagos, jewelry, toys, clothes, boots, bed sheets, candy, and many other
things. When she and her family went they left really early around 6:30 so they could spend their
whole day there. Since their family was very big, they separated and went in two different cars.
The drive felt very long since both cars were crowded and everyone was squished together.
When they arrived there, everyone was really exhausted because of how long the drive
was but were excited at the same time to spend their day there. When everyone was ready, they
went to visit the church. The church was having mass when they got there, so they stayed there
until it ended. It was very beautiful, especially how it was decorated. Everything was gold, and
colorful, and had many plants, especially this one plant called “Flor De Noche Buena”. It was a
really bright, red flower. The church also had a huge sculpture of when Jesus was born called “El
Nacimiento de Jesucristo.”
