80 The Unforgettable Moments in Life

                                                  A Day to Remember

                                                       By Isaiah Lewis

My name is Yumi Ring, and I am the mother of Isaiah. I was born in the Marshall Islands.

Every day, I’d wake up to the smell of

the fresh ocean and I would hear the

waves crashing. Birds would be chirping

and flying around while other kids would

be running around and playing outside on

the hot and bright sunny day. It doesn’t

really rain much in the Marshall Islands, so kids playing outside was very normal. Parents would

have conversations with other parents about how their day has been. When I was raised in the

Marshall Islands, I lived with my family. I have three brothers and four sisters. We all loved to go

swimming because it would be hot every day and we had nothing to do, so we would just swim

because it was very fun. One afternoon, my brothers and sisters and I went swimming in the

blue, salty ocean, but it was different this time. Out of nowhere, I felt something touch my leg

below the water. This thing started swimming up into my arms and got stuck there. It started

wiggling its body, trying to get free, but I wanted to see what was stuck underneath my arms. I

lifted up my arms as fast as I could and swayed them down so I could catch whatever was

underneath my arms. I grabbed the thing and lifted it up to see what it was. It was a FISH. I

couldn’t believe that I caught a fish with just my hands and arms. It was a medium-sized blue

eyed fish. I couldn’t handle how fast it was wiggling to try to get free, so I just let it go, but I was

so surprised and happy because that was the first time I had ever caught a fish with just my hands
