Tag to Bad
By I. Rodriguez
When my father David Rodriguez was about 12 years old, he lived in a small house in the
middle of Guerrero, Mexico. It was dry and hot and there were not a lot of trees. It was crowded
where he lived because he was living with his brothers and sister and also his mom. His dad had
passed away before he was born, but his older siblings acted like his parents. There were ten
siblings, but his favorite was his sister, Eva.
They did everything together. They rode bikes and played tag and hide and seek. One day
my dad and his sister, Eva were playing tag. They were all over the place. They were running
from the front yard to the back, inside, outside until finally when running in the front yard there
was an alacran (scorpion) waiting. My dad accidentally stepped on it while running. The sting
was horrible. It felt like he was getting shot. You could hear a loud thump as he fell to the
ground. He was crying like he was never going to stop. But when he asked for help, his sister just
laughed because she thought it was to bait her in, but he kept crying and yelling in pain. Finally,
she came and picked him up and took him to his room and he fell asleep.
When he woke up, he looked at the clock and his eyes were wide open. He had slept for
seven hours! He got up to go look for his family, and they were excited to see that I was okay.
They said they were worried because of how long he had been asleep. He survived the scorpion’s
sting!
