RCM - A Practical Guide

Figure 12 - HT Task interval calculation example (Other)

            No

It may sound a little dramatic but getting this wrong, or introducing HT maintenance where it doesn’t
meet criteria, is as close as it gets to repeating the mistakes of the past and inducing cost through
            spurious maintenance.
            For example:

            Issue Effect
Task interval too long Large number of asset failures resulting in the realization of
failure consequences. Potentially serious if they are contrary to
                                 safety etc.
Task interval too short Induced cost associated with assets not realisation there
operational life. Increased potential of inducing a Waddington
Effect style issue with apparent increase in infant mortality.

7 - What should be done if no maintenance task is selected?

Is a failure finding (FF) task applicable and effective?

***Applicable only for hidden functional failures***
If OC or HT maintenance is not suitable for a given hidden failure, then FF maintenance is the next
consideration. A failure finding operation is considered a default action because it can only identify
functional failure after it has occurred.
A FF task is a test or check to see if the hidden function is available.

                                                                         41
