Your job requires you to influence people just about all the time. It may take the form of gaining
support, inspiring others, persuading others to join in, engaging someone’s imagination or in creating
relationships. To be a great influencer and create an impact requires a combination of interpersonal,
communication, presentation and assertiveness skills; with the confidence and willingness to use
yourself to make things happen. It is about acknowledging, understanding and appreciating others. It
is about adapting your personal style when you become aware of the affect you are having on other
people, while still being true to yourself. Research tools to understand personality types i.e. Myers
Briggs (MBTI) so you understand yourself and others preferences better.

Think benefits. If you
want to influence
others you have to
empathise with their
situation and translate
your message into
benefits for them – it is
all about the message
that is received and
what it means for
them.
