Dave & Jill believe passionately in the game and believe that it should
be played as a game of skill. That is, for the most part as duplicate bridge
in a club. They also believe that the bridge club should have a social area
so that the hands can be discussed after all sessions.
They have been asked why their lessons, especially at the first levels
contain so much on card play. It is because they have seen over the years
that players start to distrust the bidding we teach if they are forever failing
to make their contract because of their lack of skill playing the cards.
A secret
When you bought this book you probably thought that it was just a
book that taught you about bridge. This it does but it also aims to do
much more than that.
i It aims to teach you a bit of history. This is mainly because many
of the plays and ideas come from Whist and before and so contain
names of people from history. Do you know the Vicar of Bray,
Morton’s Fork or the Merrimac? You will, in time.
i You need some mental arithmetic. Do not worry you just need to
count to 13 and add numbers where the total is no more than 40.
i Because bridge is a partnership game you will need to get along
with partner. Remember that “happy partners play better”. If you
can accomplish this not only will it improve your social skills it will
improve your own self-esteem and your idea of your self worth.
i You will need to learn a new language. Do not worry that is not
French, Greek of Esperanto, as the official language of bridge is
English (well, Americans think it is American). Experienced bridge
players use common English words in different ways to express
some ideas in bridge. So that you do not get lost we are going to
put some of these in the table below and then add to that table in
each chapter. You should learn the ones below as these include
