The way this book works.

Each chapter in this book contains a lesson, a resumé, exercises with
answers, a table of new words, some hands for you to play and then notes
on how you should have played them. We have tried to lay it out to make
it easy for you to use. We hope that you agree. When we are giving lessons
face to face it takes just under 2½ hours to give the lesson and play the
practice hands. 10 lessons are needed in one course and hence gives us a
true, if slightly obscure, claim of bridge in a day.
We strongly suggest that you read each chapter slowly and, maybe,
more then once as each contains a huge amount of information some of
which might well be missed on the first reading. If you are inclined you
should also watch the slide show for the lesson on the Bridge Bug web site
        or YouTube or BBO.
Then you should do the exercises provided. Do them all and then
check the answers. Do not worry if you get them wrong! In fact, unlike
        many teachers...

We give you permission to make mistakes

Now find 3 friends who also want to learn to play the game and make
up the hands provided. Hands are shown in one of 3 ways.

Suppose we are discussing this hand -
