partnerships. North and South are one partnership and East and West are
        the second.
Any trick won by say, South, is added to the total of those won by the

        Why bridge?

What is the simplest reason why you should learn to play bridge and
invest time and money into the game when other games can be learnt in 5
        minutes?
Unlike games such as Snap and Noughts & Crosses, where you can
learn the rules in 2 minutes and be bored with it after an hour there is
always something new to learn about bridge. Teachers, as well as students,
should be continually learning and improving their game. Further, the
theory of the game keeps developing and so the teacher must continually
update their teaching methods and the content of their lessons to keep up.
However, they should beware not to follow some of the wild and
unproven but fashionable trends and instead to question new ideas and
prove their worth using real live play and the many diverse computer
        techniques that are available.
Players just keep on improving until senility sets in and there is lots of
good evidence to show that playing bridge delays even that.

Bridge is a fun game with many facets and the most difficult is to get
the best out of your partner. Remember -
         Happy partners play better.

Finally, you should remember that the quickest way to learn is to play.
It would be best for you to play at least once a week between lessons.

Now let us play a hand. We are going to play “My first hand” shown
at the end of this chapter and we are simply going to play Whist. (The
