Chapter 1: The Basics

        What is Bridge?

The most important thing to remember whether you are in a lesson or
        not is this:

            Bridge is a game!

Bridge is a trick taking game from the Whist family. It is played with a
pack of standard playing cards, without jokers.
In this pack there are four suits with thirteen cards in each suit. The
        suits are -    Í      - spades;     Ì - hearts;
                       Ë - diamonds; Ê - clubs.

Of the 13 cards in each suit the Ace is the highest and then right down
to the lowest which is the 2. The complete order is -

            Yes, the Ace is always
high and the 2 is the lowest
        card.
It is a game for two
        partnerships (4 players) and
all of the cards are dealt,
meaning that each player has 13.
When the play period begins, the player on lead takes any card out of
their hand and puts it face down on the table in front of them. Note that it
is better to place the card face down first because then, if it is not your
lead, there is no damage done by allowing partner to know you have a
card that he should have no knowledge of until it is legally played. This is
called exposing a card (and there are penalties, but don’t worry about that
        yet).
Play then continues clockwise until each player has a card in front of
