Modern Geomatics Technologies and Applications
However, these methods have limitations and disadvantages. The main
limitation is that the measurements are local that is cause the measurements be
strongly influenced by noise (unwanted signals). Also, the geotechnical
analysis is more complicated compared to the geodetic analysis, because the
observations aren't linked to the control stations.
To evaluate real behavior and performance of a dam, Geotechnical tools such
as strain gauges or extensometers, inclinometers, inverted pendulum and other
similar devices are utilized in different parts of its structure, including
foundation, embankment and side supports to record continuously required
data. Major role of instrumentation is introducing the malformation or
abnormal behavior of the dam so the warning could occur before the happening
of crisis. Definitely, better results in monitoring of structures could be obtained
by combination of geodetic and geotechnical measurements and by
performance of a comprehensive analysis of displacement. Figures 5 and 6
show the location of different type of geotechnical instruments installed in
different parts of Masjed-Soleyman dam body.
