In collecting soil samples from a town, we first get a written permission from
the CEO of the town. We then look for a detailed map of the town and
divide the town into about ten approximately equal geographical areas as
shown in Figure 6.2. The next step is walking from street to street collecting
soil samples in each of the ten areas.

These samples are then processed in our laboratory at UNAM and we use
our gamma spectrometer with nitrogen cooled HPGe detector to
determine the amount or concentrations of different radionuclides of
interest in the samples. We next use these concentrations to determine the
level of radiation in the town and to estimate the health hazards and
determine if the town has normal or high background radiation.
