About the Double Figure Eight Loop
Knot
with Jerry Gibbs
When you’ve been at the forefront of fishing writing for a couple decades,
as was Jerry Gibbs while serving as Fishing Editor for Outdoor Life
magazine till the mid-2000s (taking up that mantle in the 1970s following
the great Joe Brooks), you tend to learn a knot or two—or hundreds.
Jerry did exemplary work for OL during those decades, and while I was
his editor there in the early 1990s, I’m proud to say we became friends.
Interestingly, we’ve hunted birds together more than we’ve fished, but I’ve
learned lots from Jerry through the years. I asked him about fishing
knots, and he came up with a beautiful recommendation—the Double
Figure Eight Loop Knot. The knot Jerry describes here in his own words
is similar to the Homer Rhode Loop Knot (included in this book), only
you’ll double up the overhand knots each time, before securing the loop
in place.
