angler and guide living today. This knot answered all my criteria. Of
course, you can use it with a hard-bodied lure, soft plastic, or bait hook.
It’s not confined only to those eighty-pound-test mono tippets; I’ve used it
down to thirty-pound test. After that, I might switch off to a Non-slip Mono
Loop as in, say, a twenty-pound-test or lighter tippet, because with that
lighter material there’s no need to drop your hook over an object—hard or
short piece of rope tied into a loop—to snug up the Figure Eight, which is
something I always do working with heavier tippet. On trips where it’s
impractical to carry one of those fly-leader stretchers, I’ve used the knot
to quickly tie up a batch of flies to forty- and sixty-pound test tippet, coiled
the tippet and the rest of the leader, and stowed them in zippered plastic
bags. Taking them out for use, a little hand stretching and everything was
fine—and my flies swam straight.”
