“I figure that with inherently less flexible heavier tippets, any little extra
you can give to add movement to your fly is a good thing. Thus a loop
knot is a good thing. That said, back in the day, pioneering Florida Keys
guide Nat Ragland often went to great effort of snelling many of his
streamers (aided by the front-end shank space of classic Florida Keys–
style tarpon flies) feeling he got better hook sets. I still like a loop
connection and, of course, want one that’s strong, easy to tie, and, with
flies, facilitates a straight swim. I’ve used a Homer Rhode Loop Knot,
which is really simple to tie but sometimes results in a slight offset or kink
that discourages a straight fly swim. The Uni is really awful to cinch up
tight on a heavy tippet.
