Lissi pulls up in her handbag and stands in the hallway, and with her other hand
she rubs dark-green skirt.
Ann takes her by the arm and stands next to it.
"Wait," says Lissi, as they touch the sidewalk with their shoes. She rattles her
old worn-out bag, searching for a lighter.
"Stand still!" She squats behind Ann's and lights the cigarette. Ann looks at the
bus, which disappears further out in the distance of the dreary concrete
landscape. The entire area is building blocks made in grey concrete. There are
signs with names on the houses, so that a stranger can walk around the area
without getting lost. The road names and neighbourhoods have names that
should draw the mind of idyll and ease, but the reality is quite different - the
contrast seems almost humorous.
"We need to find Strawberry Lane," says Lissi.
The street name bears no resembles to where it’s actually located.
"What shall we name the kitten?" Lissi asks, as they begin to walk. Ann still
doesn’t answer. She’s in her own head, as they walk towards the traffic lights,
just as the cat seller had explained them on the phone.
"If it’s a boy, his name should be Peter, and if it becomes a girl, her name is
Jacqueline," Ann now replies.
Lissi takes hard drags on the cigarette and looks ahead, then she stops.
"Wait, what was the name of the salesman?"
She opens the bag and bends faintly down to her knees so that the handbag
partly rests on her thick thighs. She clutters around in the bag with a noteworthy
expression on her face, as if there were something very important she had to
find. That's the way it’s always been with Lissi; she hates papers and numbers.
Finally, after a bit of digging around, she finds a small, twisted paper note. She
unfolds the note and studying it closely. Then she says, "Janokovic. That’s the
name. Janokovic."
"Janokovic, hmm, what a strange name," says Ann.
"Keep quiet. We need to find the Strawberry Lane 35,” Lissi says slightly
annoyed this time, as they begin to move on.
