"Pssst," wheezes Janokovic, striking out after them with his hand. He quickly
bends down and grabs the scruff of both kittens.
"Well, let's get in," he whispers.
Again, he makes a weird frown, but this time there’s no mistaken; he’s in pain.
"That damn back of mine," he says, puffing them into the hallway. "Please close
the door behind you."
Ann gently closes the door and starts coughing, the stench of cat poop as well as
days old sweat from Janokovic causes her eyes to run.
Lissi and Ann continue to stand in the hallway for the moment, leaving
Janokovic trudging in the direction of the living room, before realizing he’s
expecting them to follow suit.
"Follow me please."
Jano then proceeds to mutter some British expletives that they don’t understand.
He picks up the kittens and puts them in a blue rubber basket, which is placed
between the living room and the open kitchen.
"Sit down please. Take a seat."
He points to the green sofa that’s pushed up along the wall. On the opposite wall
the room's window section with sliding glass doors that leads out to a large
balcony; the balcony looks dirty.
“Let me just remove the newspapers. I have them here to prevent the cats from
peeing on the couch, ”Janokovic says, signalling that they now may sit on the
couch.
"Can I hold the cat?" asks Ann.
"Yeah, but first you have to pay me the money, then you can touch it as much as
you want." Janokovic sits down in the armchair looking at them. The old
armchair almost bends beneath the weight of his dense body.
Lissi opens her bag, takes out her purse, finds a hundred note bill, and places it
on the table.
"Here you go," she looks at him intensely, as if he was about to do something
erratic “Can she hold the cat now please?"
Janokovic grabs the kitten by the nape and hands it to Ann.
