He pauses, wipes his head with the handkerchief and continues:
“I’ll make sure you don’t take all the heat. But we will talk more about that later,
as for now, it is the lack of police presence at the docks at time of the crime, that’s
the big topic of conversation. "
"Do you truly mean that?" Says the mayor.
“People think that the police are a machine of miracles. When trouble hits, the
force is here, ready to solve the accident, ready fix any problems that have
occurred in a split second. People wonder if we don't have a lot of "hot traces";
they forget that it has been night-time for over six hours, where we’ve been
unable to do anything really, besides providing security and help the injured and
question the people who have been on the scene or witnessed the accident.
During the night, my people have come to interrogate a hundred witnesses at
least, and yet the press reckons we've figured out whom the perpetrators are. "
"You are right. As usual." says the mayor, "There is no mercy for the authorities
that people paid their taxes to. They just simply have to work or else all hell
breaks loose. They forget that we are humans too.”
As they open the door to the office, they see two young officers standing right
inside with their police helmets firmly clenched to their chest, tripping
nervously.
"Yes?" Says the chief, looking tiredly at the officers as he let’s a pipe cleaner run
carefully around the pipe's mouthpiece.
"We think we have something to tell."
"Well, what do you have for me? Let me hear, tell me, tell me. ” The chief of
police walks over to the desk, sits down and gives a sign with a rolling motion by
his hand, that they should start their reporting.
“We are patrolling as patrol 44, and we uncover and interrogates in Carlton Hill
West. As usual, there was a large group of youngsters in the yard and in the
streets. As you know, we often have trouble with the different gangs around the
area. There are many different groups, and they change very frequently. A thick
Pakistani boy told us that he knew the so-called pickpocket gang, and that they
had been seen on the pier the past few days. He claims he has seen them begging
in front the First Brighton hotel."
