"Open the door. It's locked!"
Confused by the harsh words from the other side of the door, Uno got up and
walked with long, dragging steps towards the door. When he opened the foor, a
fist with full force hit him in the face. It struck him like a hammer. Completely
overwhelmed with his glasses flying off his, he immediately fell on his knees
while holding his nose with blood coming out.
He didn’t remember anything else before waking up on a cold concrete floor with
a brutal headache, unable to open his one eye. Where he was, he did not know.
Uno had never felt such a pain before, and with the adrenaline and anxiety
flowing through his body, he crawled on all four back and forth in the room, in
search of an exit.
Uno, who was still lying on the floor all curled up, heard a key to the door and a
man presenting himself;
“I’m Fritz Jokopi from Gestapo.” Said the man, followed by a "Get up!"
Uno couldn’t answer. A cocktail of freezing cold and anxiety sent massive quivers
through his body. He pushed his arms firmly around his head; in order to shield
him from what he already knew would come.
"Get up," said the voice a little more kindly this time.
"There is a jug of water for you."
"I haven’t done anything," Uno said with a squeaking voice, feeling like a
bomb just exploded inside him.
Another man stepped in the room. The two men got a hold of Uno's arms and
raised him up for a beating. The pain was excruciating as he got dragged through
the hallway. They pulled him down for a long and dark hallway for some time
until the three men stopped. A sign read; interrogate.
Uno was pushed down on a chair, which, apart from a sink, a small table and two
other chairs, was the only thing in the room, as far as Uno could tell. It was quite
dark, especially when he only had one functional eye. One of the men slided a
metal bowl with water and a glass in front of Uno, before leaving the room and
locking the door.
With his hand, gently examining his nose, he felt it was like a big lump of pain,
solidified blood. Where was he? In a prison? In a camp? In town or out in the
countryside? Again, he had a feeling that something detonated in his stomach.
