Chapter 19

Germany, Augsburg northwest of Munich, October 1943

Kim's fast paced walk was turning into running, eventually being as fast as he
could be. A huge splotch of sweat was spreading to the back of his short-sleeved

white shirt – without him noticing. He just sprinted as he clenched the spacious

brown envelope in his hand containing 40 photos.

People stopped a while and looked at Kim, who ran clattering with his wooden
shoes over Augsburg's cobblestone. Fortunately, photomaker Martzen could do

without him for an afternoon. There was nothing to do anyway. Neither him nor

                   Shiebler's needed him now.
The townsfolk labeled him as strange. He was well aware of that, but at least he

had employment. Luckily, most of the town shops took good care of him, when

he offered them his help. The young men in town gradually got fewer, and Kim
delivered goods and provided service at numeral places. People didn’t care that

he was stuttering, that his hair stuck out in all directions and that he had a
squinting eye – in fact; squinting so much he was rejected from military session.

A few weeks ago, when his big brother Christen was at home on leave, he

called Kim into the living room. The parents weren’t at home. Christen sat in
their couch, almost enthroned with his soldier uniform, in front of him there laid

a few banknotes. Kim couldn’t take his eyes off them.

                   "Would like to earn them?"
                   Kim nodded and sat down.

"Listen. If you see or hear anything that's not as it should be you’d tell me. Do you

                   understand?"
                   Again, Kim nodded.

"Go to Augsburg Strasse, 10. Knock on the door and as ask for adjutant Sacher.

Now the important part: Inform Sacher if you are experiencing anything
suspicious. Sacher is my friend. You can trust him, " Christen said and pushed the

                   money towards Kim.
"They are in search of snitches in the area. You know people, so if you hear
