Aruch Hashulchan, Orach Chaim 639:17
The reason for their argument is that those who exempt [one from eating in the rain] hold that we require the
element of “reside as you usually dwell [in your house],” and no person lives in a house where rain is leaking
through, and as for the comparison to Pesach, that [just teaches] that one must eat in the sukkah when it is
fitting to dwell there, but the first night is not excluded from the principle of “reside as you usually dwell.” But
those who obligate [one to eat even in the rain] hold that that the first night is not included in the [general]
limitation of “reside as you usually dwell,” for that relates to the entire festival, but the first night is derived from
the [comparison] of the fifteenth-fifteenth from Pesach… This is an independent mitzvah to fulfill eating and
sleeping in the sukkah [on the first night] just as we are obligated to fulfill the mitzvah of eating matza on the
first night of Pesach, where even one who is mitztaer (highly discomforted) is obligated, and the same is true
regarding sukkah. Therefore, it is sufficient to eat a k’zayit, similar to matza, and it is sufficient to take a short
nap, which is similar to eating a k’zayit, which is a snack, but the Torah decreed that we fulfill this without any
conditions even if one is mitztaer, and even if it is raining, and the custom follows this opinion. Therefore, even
concerning a sick person who is uncomfortable, if he is able to go to the sukkah just to hear Kiddush and eat a
k’zayit, he is obligated to do so. However, regarding sleeping the custom is not to be stringent when it is raining
even to require a short nap, for in any event we are lenient regarding sleeping, as we have explained [that where
it is cold one is exempt from sleeping, as will be explained in our shiur further below]. Furthermore, perhaps
the comparison to matzah only refers to actual eating and not to sleeping, which doesn’t apply at all to matzah.
Based on his argument cited above that ideally one should eat a k’beitza in the sukkah on the first night, the Mishna Berura
rules that even if one ate a k’zayit in the rain, if the rain stops, one must return to the sukkah and eat another portion more
than the size of a k’beitza (and this time he says the beracha of leisheiv basukkah) in order to fulfill one’s obligation according
to the dissenting opinion (i.e., the opinion of the Shulchan Aruch that one would not eat in the rain even on the first night).
