Summary of Hilchot Sukkah

The basis for the mitzvah of dwelling in the sukkah

Sukkah 26a – one must dwell in the sukkah in the same manner that one usually lives in one’s house
        (teshvu k’ein taduru)

Sukkah 11b – Tanna’im dispute the reason for the mitzvah:

            1. Rabbi Eliezer - To remember the clouds of glory with which Hashem protected us in the
               desert

            2. Rabbi Akiva – Hashem protected us in real booths in the desert
Shulchan Aruch – one should have in mind that this mitzvah is to remember the clouds of glory (in
        accordance with Rabbi Eliezer)

Mishna Berura – this is only lechatchila, but if one just had intention to fulfill the mitzvah, he has
        fulfilled his obligation

Eating and drinking in the sukkah

        Shulchan Aruch –

            1. one needs to eat, drink and sleep in the sukkah all seven days of Sukkot, similar to the man-
ner in which one would live in one’s house

            2. one should bring one’s furniture and beautiful utensils into the sukkah

Rema – one mustn’t do any disgraceful activities in the sukkah

The obligation on the first night

Sukkah 27a – although during the rest of the chag, one is not obligated to eat a sufficient measure of
bread that requires consumption in the sukkah, on the first night one is obligated to eat a minimum
measure in the sukkah. This is derived from the verbal analogy of the mention of the date of the
fifteenth in the Torah with regard to sukkah and with regard to eating matzah on the first night of
        Pesach

Ran – three understandings of this comparison to eating matzah on Pesach

            - some hold that on the first night, one must eat more than a k’beitza of bread in the sukkah,
