And regarding the custom nowadays to be lenient about sleeping [in the sukkah], and only those very scrupulous
about keeping the mitzvot do so, some explain it due to the cold, for there is discomfort in sleeping in cold
regions; but I think that the reason is due to the fact the mitzva of sukkah is for “a man and his home,” for a
husband and wife [together], just as he lives during the year. So in a place where he cannot sleep together with
his wife because there is no private sukkah for them, he is exempt. But it is good to be stringent and be there with
his wife just as he lives the entire year, if it is possible to have a private sukkah.

The Shulchan Aruch mentions another time when one is exempt from being in the Sukkah.

Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 639:4
All seven days one reads and learns in the sukkah. And when one understands and carefully analyzes what one
is reading and learning, one may learn outside the sukkah so that his mind will be at ease. One who is davening,
if he wishes, he may daven in the sukkah, or outside the sukkah.
