Sustainability/sustainable development is necessary to maintain harmony between

environment, society, and economy, as well as a balance between development and the

environment. It promotes inter-generational equity, that is, better quality of life for present and

future generations. Moreover, the benefit from development must be equated with the impact
on the environment for such development. While development is important is necessary for

human development, the impact on the environment ought to be considered, given planetary

boundaries and the dangers of any overshoot.
